Breitbart noted:
"Should Congresswoman Elise Stefanik choose to enter the race for governor, she would begin the Republican primary in a dominant position and offer the GOP its strongest opportunity to defeat Governor Kathy Hochul in the 2026 general election."
A new GrayHouse poll conducted between April 22–24, 2025, surveyed 826 registered voters in New York and found that if the Republican primary for governor were held today:
• 44% of voters would support Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY)• 7% would support Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY)
• 5% would support Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman• 44% said they were undecided
The poll also showed:
• Stefanik has a net favorability of +47 among Republican voters (56% favorable, 9% unfavorable).
• She holds a +10 net favorability with Independents, compared to +2 for Lawler and -1 for Blakeman.• 61% of all voters say it’s “time for someone new” instead of re-electing Gov. Kathy Hochul.
In a hypothetical general election matchup between Hochul and Stefanik:
• 46% would vote for Hochul• 40% would vote for Stefanik• 14% were undecided
The article also pointed out that Hochul’s job approval rating is "deeply underwater" at -18 overall, with 36% approving and 55% disapproving.
