Iwata Asks: Wii Fit Edition, 1080° Balance Board Title?

In an attempt to explain Nintendo’s vision behind the Wii, Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata has been conducting interviews with Wii developers. To give insight into the development of Wii Fit, an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto has been posted on Nintendo’s site today.

Many interesting points are made during the interview, but perhaps one of the more interesting remarks is about how the title was actually first thought of. Interestingly enough, Miyamoto stumbled onto the idea after he gained interest in his own weight fluctuations. After looking into diet information, he started keeping graphs of his weights at various times of the month, and after playing around with the idea, the inspiration for Wii Fit struck.

One planned element that actually was left out of the final product was the ability to record data pertaining to your eating patterns onto your DS. I’m not too sure about how often I would have used that feature, but it would have been interesting nonetheless.

Pulling off tricks using the Wii Balance Board  could prove to be tricky.

Another interesting remark Miyamoto made is about the possibility of using the Balance Board for other Wii games. In the interview, his specific examples were “I could make a version of the Snowboard Slalom with improved courses, or maybe 1080° Balance Boarding.” Iwata of course had ideas of his own stating that he believed WiiWare to be perfect for small titles that wanted to try using the Balance Board. Either way, Wii fans have something to look forward to in the Balance Board.
